Welcome to Sound & Memory's Substack!
Death and dying through the lens of musician/death doula Concetta Abbate
Welcome, everybody!
I’m really excited to launch this substack, which I’m going to be using as a way to stay in touch and to share my longer-format reflections on making art in and around the process of dying.
As a free subscriber, you’ll get announcements about Sound & Memory events, workshops and concerts! I’ll also be writing occasional public posts, as I come across death-and-or-art-related information that I think everyone should hear.
I’ll also be keeping everyone in the loop about my artistic work that overlaps with my death doula work, like LAMINARIA.
LAMINARIA is a folk-horror-noir chamber music suite about a sea ghost in a kelp forest which I composed. It has been performed with a 10-piece orchestra 11 times in collaboration with the Wendy Osserman Dance Company. LAMINARIA explores themes of death, trauma, and the overwhelming power of nature through the musical painting of an underwater sea witch-ghost. This is a project that I’ve truly nourished with my heart blood for the past 5 years.
This week this project is being birthed into the world in a new way! LAMINARIA is now out on all streaming platforms and we are having a release party this Friday! (11-1-24)

If you can’t join us for the release party in person, you can still purchase the limited edition commemorative candle which comes with a link to download the album tracks. This candle was hand made by artisan candlemaker Water Bruja. You can find it at my BANDCAMP Page:
My next Substack post is going to feature a review of LAMINARIA from one of my terminally ill death doula clients. It was an honor to hear a response to this work about intermediary and liminal spaces from someone who is actively, consciously dying. I’ll be sharing that review and a reflection on what it’s like as an artist to receive this very unique kind of feedback. If you’re interested in access to work like that, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription!
I’m so looking forward to sharing with you about the work I’m doing, and your support makes it possible for me to continue forging this path in contemporary art and deathcare. Thank you for being here with me!
